WTFriday: Chrysler’s Terminator Sponsorship

I’m trying something new here. WTFriday is dedicated to pointing out stories in the media field that make you think WTF, it just happens to fall on a Friday.

From Reuters

“This spring, Terminator 4 comes out and we will be one of the sponsors,” Chrysler director of media Susan Thomson said in a presentation at the Automotive News World Congress. “We have a following with the Terminator movies and we are going to continue with that.”

Who goes out and buys a car they see from a movie? I can hear the response, “Terminator, Salvation will be in front of millions of people and that is great exposure for our car.” Unless the actors are running over the machines and the vehicles are a vital defense against the machines, it is pointless.

Financial terms of the sponsorship deal were not disclosed.

I wonder why? You’re asking for 3 billion dollars from the government so you can pay a film to put your cars in a movie. The subliminal message they are sending is that they are a moron and their company will be terminated by the end of the fiscal year.

So when Chrysler went to the government to ask for a bailout this is their strategy? It is like a 10 year old asking mom for more money to buy candy because they have a toothache. WTF!

What Should I Do?

robin

I came outside my house and saw a red robin injured on my driveway. What should I do? A little voice went off in the back of my head telling me to end it’s life. Hey, I’m being honest here. I think it was my male ancestry echoing through a time portal in my head that was telling me to end it’s misery with a crushing foot to the head. But the 21st century Coon thought I should pick the birdy up and bring it to the vet.

You know that voice you hear in the back of your head… sometimes telling you to do the right thing and other times to do the lazy thing. That is my other voice, my bad side is lazy. But I did the right thing and brought the bird to the vet.

Fly away pretty bird, fly, fly away.

The Triad’s New Gaming Center

My good friend Jared Miles just opened a gaming center in High Point, or maybe it’s in Greensboro. Regardless of the location parents have a place to drop off their kids and older gaming geeks have a place to geek out at. If your addicted to Halo 3 then Mule Bytes is the place for you. It is a great set up. They hold Halo tournaments all the time so check it out if think you can hang. I know I can’t so don’t bother to ask. I went the second week it opened and I got slaughtered. I always leave early other wise the vulgarity that is not allowed on the premises would be flowing out like Niagara Falls.

Check out the cool video Jared and his business partner Todd Bennett produced. It answers all the questions one might ask these gaming geeks.

Merry Family Day

To all of my readers I hope you enjoy this time of year. It is all about family and memories. The greatest gift I can receive each year is spending more time with my parents including my in-laws (and I’m not sucking up). As I start to mature and self reflect, I really do appreciate the kind of person that I’ve turned into. I got that way because of my parents and my brother. I am truly lucky to grow up in a home where brilliant people were around me.

When I interviewed Ronnie Baker Brooks a few years back he told me something that stuck with me. Koko Taylor, Robert Cray, Luther Allison, Buddy Guy, his father Lonnie Baker Brooks and other great blues musicians were the staple around his house when he was growing up. If you listen to his music you can hear those influences in his tunes. The way he plays is a tribute to those legends.

Am I doing the same as Ronnie? I don’t feel like I’m there yet. But with each new client I work with and every new creative voice I speak with I can feel the passion rise and excitement flourish through my mind.

I didn’t have a secret Santa this year and what a blessing that was. This is the first year in which I did not buy gifts for my loved ones. Of course I feel choked up that I could not give to the people I love. But that is my commercial guilt speaking up and not me. Have a great day today my peeps.

I shot this last year in Greensboro on Ridgeway Drive. This year more people participated and it is simply stunning.

Hypocrisy = Democracy

My brother sent me a link from Lawrence Lessig’s blog about the Texas Legislature. What happens when the legislature passes a law that requires citizens to show a picture ID when they vote so they can’t vote twice? Well what is good for the citizens isn’t for the legislature. News 42 in Austin, Texas exposes the voting habits of the Texas legislature. Please watch this video.

I’ve been critical in the past about how the News is broadcast is this country but I can’t help to applaud what this news station in Texas did. This is the kind of news that every citizen needs to know about. Do you know how your legislature votes? I don’t, but I will find out soon enough. You should too!
