Slideshow Software Fotomagico 4 Review

If you are a photographer, professional or amateur this is software for you. Boinx Software has put out a very good stand alone slideshow creator. As a video professional this is a way for me to create a slideshow to slap together quickly. I prefer some bells and whistles and like to add effects and motion graphics to make it more compelling…but for presentations, weddings and events this is the software to use.

Some things I’d like to see added to Fotomagico for future updates…

  • Blur effect
  • Ability to crop photos and animate it
  • Masking ability

It’s a shortlist but when I use images in my video I use those three things often. Check out the video review below and under the video review is a great video tutorial produced by Boinx software about new features and in-depth look at Fotomagico 4. You can download and try out Fotomagico 4 for 5 days. But make sure you are running 10.8 in order to use it.

Light Sweep Plug-in for Final Cut Pro and Motion

FxPack that contains five plug-ins (Fake 3D, Light Sweep, Drop Shadow, Numbers and Grow Bounds) mainly for Apple Motion. You can find more information and download it from my blog.

I am so happy to find this Light Sweep plug-in by Tapio Haaja. This free plug-in was created in FxFactory and only works in FxFactory Pro. So if you already have FxFactory Pro in your plugin library go ahead and download the plugin and enjoy it. I know this effect is overused everywhere on TV but why not jump on the bandwagon? Props Tapio!

Tiffen DFX 3.0 Review/Tutorial

Tiffen, I know you have been in the film/video world for years and are well established too. But I had no idea about your sweet plugins for FCP.

Tiffen Dfx Video/Film Plug-in is a top of the line plug-in suite that incorporates filters and lenses that Tiffen is so well known for and infuses it into Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Premiere Pro and Avid. It is a complete plug-in suite that adds glass filters, specialized lenses, optical lab processes, film grain, exacting color correction, plus natural light and photographic effects.

One of the best features of this plug-in is the usability. The Dfx Interface allows you to preview the tons of presets each filter comes with. Within the Dfx Interface you can customize the parameters of a preset to make it yours while viewing it in real-time.

There are so many different film looks it is absolutely ridiculous…which is a great thing. In the past I never dabbled with different film stocks because of price and I didn’t shoot with a film camera. Now that everything is digital those looks are fresh to a new generation of video editors.

Some of my favorite filters from Tiffen Dfx are the Light filters. You can add lights, gobos and even flags to your video. I love the gobo, simply adding a gobo to an interview gives the interview a fresh look. I’m so glad to have this product in my effects library. It will turn good looking video into beautiful looking video…but let’s not kid ourselves. It is always important to shoot it right the first time, great lighting, lenses and composition will always keep you looking like a pro. Now Tiffen Dfx 3.0 will make you stand out in the crowded field of professionals.

Price
$599…yeah, that stings the purse a bit especially with FCP X out and about and this is not yet ready for FCP X. The price of these filters are more than the upgrade to FCP X, there is a reason for that…the effects are amazing. But ask questions and research before you buy any plug-ins set. Will they upgrade to allow you to use these with FCP X? I mean FCP 7 will eventually fade once Apple gets it right with FCP X. Until then, if you have FCP 7 check out these filters for FREE for 15 days and do a cool project and impress your client or wow the audience at a film festival.

Tiffen Dfx Video/Film Feature Highlights

A Must “Get” To Search Dialog in Final Cut Pro

I’ve been waiting for this software for the longest time. As an Independent Filmmaker I have so many hats to wear that I don’t have the time to properly log all the important information into Final Cut Pro…OK, I’m just lazy and I know I’m not the only one either. Get, is the kind of software that will allow me to get to bed earlier and actually go out and have a life. I know other non-linear editing software has this feature already incorporated in it but as a Final Cut Pro user this is something that has been missing for years.

To be able to type in a word and Get searches your media footage and places markers in the media. Then you can export those markers into the Final Cut Pro project is priceless. Well sorta, the price of Get is $249 for a full license. But if you are working on someone else’s project and you are not on their machine you can rent it as well for 30 days -$59, 60 days – $109 or 90 days – $159. I love that you are able to rent it. If you don’t believe the hype, wait until you have to edit a project and try it for free for 10 days.

I’m not sure if Final Cut Pro X will have this feature incorporated in it or not but this is a no-brainier if you are a Final Cut Pro user and especially if you edit with massive amounts of media you gotta get, “Get“.

New Version of Final Cut Pro “Awesome”

TechCrunch posted about Final Cut Pro’s newest update and said “It’s Spectacular”. Where did they get that adjective?

a small group of video editors were on the Apple campus recently in order to preview the new version of video editing software, which is in the same space as Avid and Adobe Premier. Apparently Apple is still putting the finishing touches on “the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago” and wanted pro user feedback. Emphasis on “pro.”

I put “Awesome” in quotes because when Steve Jobs was asked the question about what the next version will be like he stated, “Next release will be awesome.” That is great news to hear since the previous updated versions have been adequate and there have been tons of rumors in the professional world about Apple not putting the time into the professional software that has won over the filmmaking community. Since Apple has dominated the phone market and mp3 players the past few years the Pro users were getting nervous that we were not an important part of the future of Apple. I can understand those concerns but those rumors were based on fear and I never believed them.

I’m interested in seeing what kind of upgrades that they put into the new version. I hope new music beds are in Soundtrack Pro, easier search functions within the timeline in FCP, finally have Blu-Ray compression in compressor and Blu-Ray options in DVDSP. What would you like to see in the next version of FCP?

Review: Scone Looks

If you purchased Final Cut Studio then you have Color installed on your computer and can use these useful presets right away and create better looking video instantly. If you use Color and understand the application then this purchase is a no brainer. It will give you so many instant fresh looks it is great. One of the great things about these presets is the fact if you make a change to it you can always save that version as your own preset and build to your library of presets. Now if you have never opened the application I suggest you purchase a couple of great training DVDs to learn Color better. Look into Complete Training for Apple Color from Class on Demand. After you understand Color better these Scone Looks will be just a click away from turning your regular video into something special.

SCONE LOOKSâ„¢ come with 400+ Color Grades, Primary Grades, Secondary Grades and ColorFx presets for use within Apple Color. These Looks work with progressive and interlaced footage. SCONE LOOKSâ„¢ can be modified and combined in endless ways to suit your specific footage and project needs.

There are so many applications to wrap your head around if you are an Independent video editor it is impossible to become a master at them all. If you get these Scone Looks you are one step closer to mastering Color from Apple. The best way to understand how Bob came up with the look is to deconstruct the preset…there are over 400 presets that you can learn from and build on to. Scone Looks is Now get to work my busy editors.

If you want to see another example of these incredible presets in action head over to Digital Juice and check out a great tutorial Introducing Scone Looks.

The one thing I’m confused about is the price. You can get it at Class on Demand (the official site) for $110 or over at Digital Juice for $55. You decide and I apologize to COD, just keeping it real yo! That a promotional deal that expired and was not taken down.

Review: PluralEyes for Final Cut Pro

If you shoot multi-camera events, music videos or shoot with DSLR cameras this software is essential to have to make your life easier as an editor. Check out the review.

Price
$149.00 is nothing compared to the painful time spent on syncing audio to video. Well worth the price and you can test out the product for 30 day for free. Just download the software and try it.

Also want to share the latest episode of Often Awesome the series, we shot all the interviews with a Canon 7D and recorded the audio with the Zoom H4 and synced it up using PluralEyes.

Review: Class on Demand – Advanced Training for Apple Color

ColorOnce again Class on Demand does a top notch job with their training DVDs, this time with Advanced Training for Apple’s Color.

The Instructors
Bob Sliga and Steve Hullfish are once again your trainers with Apple’s Color application….but this time it’s Advanced Training (extreme trailer music playing).

This DVD will give you a great understanding of how to use Color as an advanced user. Not only using the tools and rooms in the application but it is very cerebral that makes you think like the professionals. I can’t express enough how cool it is to get access to minds like Bob and Steve.

The expertise of the trainers are outstanding and they openly give you tips and information to make you an advanced colorist right off the bat. I had a difficult time understanding Color when I first opened it up and even began with Class on Demand – Basic Training for Apple Color. After watching a few lessons over and over again and getting used to the rooms in Color, everything began to make sense. After you get an understanding of Color the Advanced training is the next logical step.

Not For Everyone
I have to warn new editors not to jump into Color until you have become very comfortable using Final Cut Pro as an editor. To think like an editor is so very important in using this application especially if you are aware of archiving, saving backups and creating presets or scones. There is only one Undo move in Color so be careful and listen to these instructors and save at every step.

Important
The project media used in this training comes with the DVD, simply drag and drop from the DVD to your desktop. Everything is sorted in easy to find folders. One thing you need to do before you begin your training with this DVD is to download from RED RED FINAL CUT STUDIO 3 INSTALLER and REDCODE QUICKTIME CODEC (BETA). Otherwise you will be lost in the first lesson. After you do that you can open your projects in this training and follow along. When I opened the first lesson I couldn’t re-link the media in the project. I tried over and over, then just moved on in the lesson until they covered that media file and that is when I knew I needed to install RED on my computer. After the installation I could finally re-link the media…only problem was the media on my computer didn’t match what they were training with.

Here is the media I was supplied with…

Outlined in the red square is what the trainers worked with…

This is not a deal breaker by any means. Just followed along with the instructors and made the changes with them…it didn’t matter what footage I was using as long as I had media linked.

Time Saving Short Cuts
Listening to these experts is the best thing about this DVD. They give so many time saving short cuts. Even the smallest of things are important to grasp like; saving grades every time you finish a color project so you can use them later or copying those grades and putting them on another computer. Also grouping Secondaries and listing them by name so if you color for one clip and you have multiple clips in your project you can group them all together and drag and drop the Color Correction on the group.

They go through and show you how to color correct for skin tone with the HSL tool. H (Hue) S (Saturation) L (Luminance). Learn how to matte a color range and enhance it with the HSL parameters.

The one I can say is they are very aware of how easy it might be to ruin all the hard work it takes to do color correction. They show short cut and methods on how to backup your work without accidentally deleting your work. Color only has 1 undo, and you can’t set it either…so if you mess up make sure you are aware of it right away. So it is invaluable to pay attention and retain that information. Part of my blog is reference for the mistakes I’ve made and how I learned from it. It’s great to share these fixed mistakes with FCP users on the internet.

One of my favorite sections is the keyframing, tracking & user shapes. You will fall in love with the motion tracker, very easy to use and easier to clean up. You can choose from automatic or manual. Each is very easy to use. At the end of this lesson Bob gives his tip on how to keep a single color and make everything else black and white. He also shows you how to change the background from black and white to any other color scheme you can think up. Outstanding!

Another great section is when these great instructors introduce you to preset nodes in the Color FX room. If you are a Shake user you will feel very comfortable using these, if not it will take sometime getting used to. Watching Bob explain what each node does is great, you really get a good understanding what each node does. At the end of the lesson Bob throws one of his samples on the screen and the node tree looks like a freaking redwood tree…as a beginner color artist it looks so intimidating but they calm me down and explain that the best learning is deconstructing a complex tree. That is a great way to learn what node does what…brilliant sirs.

Wrap It Up
As you can tell I’m a big fan of this DVD. The price is right at $99. To learn the power that this application has is incredible and worth the money and time. As an editor, learning Color will place you in another level in the editing world as a professional. There are more and more jobs being offered to Color specialists and purchasing this DVD is a step into becoming a Color specialist.

Messing Around with Luca Visual FX

Another great new plugin for FxFactory. Take a look at the sample video and it opens your mind on things to do.

I used this plugin today to make it look like someone was watching TV. Without this plugin it would’ve taken me some time to figure it out. But within 5 minutes of playing with the parameters I found the look I wanted. I just touched the basics of what kind of effects this plugin will fill my editor’s tool kit. I will post a more detailed review in the near future.
